The Consumer Unit is at the heart of electrical safety in the home. Old 'Fuse Boxes' only offer protection against faulty equipment drawing too much current and causing a fuse to 'blow'. They offer no protection against someone getting an electric shock.
The latest Consumer Units (complying with 2015 IEE 17th Edition wiring regulations) fully protect against overloads and importantly protect people from electric shock, via built-in Residual Current Devices (RCDs).
An RCD is a life-saving device which is designed to prevent you from getting a fatal electric shock if you touch something live, such as a bare wire. It can also provide some protection against electrical fires. RCDs offer a level of personal protection that ordinary fuses and circuit-breakers cannot provide.
If you have an old style ‘fuse box’ we would strongly recommend upgrading to a modern Consumer Unit. However, having an old fuse box often indicates further remedial work will also be required, to bring your house wiring up to current standards. To avoid unexpected additional costs we offer:
Free basic home electrical survey, to give you a ball-park indication of costs involved.
